Bacteria was detected in waters at Old Kona Airport, health officials reported this afternoon.

According to the Hawai‘i State Department of Health, levels of 150 per 100 mL were detected during routine beach monitoring. DOH is uncertain about the representativeness of the first sample and will be retesting.

This beach has historically met the acceptable beach threshold level, and there is no known source of fecal contamination, DOH stated.

Big Island Now will update this story when more information becomes available.
