A fire spotted in front of a Hilo home, Tuesday, July 13, was quickly extinguished after a Good Samaritan driving by noticed the smoke and flames and called 911.

Hawai‘i Fire Department received the call regarding the blaze at 11:37 a.m. located on a property at Kanoelani Street. When they arrived on scene they found a 10-foot-by-10-foot fire burning in the front lanai area of a large single-story residence.

HFD personnel used one attack line to quickly extinguish the fire. No one was home at the time of the incident.

HFD was alerted to the fire by a motorist who called 911 after seeing the smoke and fire.

“If not for this person’s awareness and quick thinking, there would have been a different outcome,” HFD officials stated. “The Hawaii Fire Department would like to thank residents and visitors alike, that we appreciate your community-mindedness with keeping our island safe.”
