The southbound lane on Highway 190 at Waikoloa Road junction has reopened after it was closed due to a spill this morning.

Hawai‘i Fire Department Battalion Chief Bill Bergin said he was driving to work when he noticed a crate had fallen off the back of a truck near mile marker 11 on Highway 190 and called it in to dispatch. HFD’s hazmat team responded for cleanup and the Department of Health has been notified.

Bergin described the spill as a corrosive liquid. The crate was marked with hazardous code 1760 class 8, meaning the liquid is not only corrosive but a cleaning liquid.

The spill was neutralized with soda ash.
