Shelter Open for Residents Evacuated Due to Hāmākua Brush Fire

Authorities opened the Pa‘auilo Gym to residents who have been evacuated as a result of a brush fire in Hāmākua, Friday afternoon, June 4.

The brush fire was first reported just before 1 p.m., shutting down Highway 19 between mile markers 34-36. Hawai‘i Fire crews from Area I responded to the scene, however, an engine and tanker from Area II’s Waimea station are also assisting.

At approximately 5 p.m., Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Agency reported one lane of travel is now open.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution as crews may be on the roadway.
