A Hawaiian-focused charter school in Hilo is open for enrollment.

Kua O Ka Lā school, originally located in Pāhoa, was destroyed during the 2018 Kīlauea eruption. The campus is now located at 345 Makalika Street, next to Nani Mau Gardens. Enrollment is open for grades pre-k through 6th at the Hilo campus and the blended online program is open for grades 4th through 8th.

“We’re trying to grow our roots in a new area,” said the charter school principal Kapoula Thompson.

The school, accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), works to find a balance in academics through hands-on learning and engaging creative mindsets while integrating Hawaiian culture.

Academics are important, Thompson said, adding the goal of the school is to create well-rounded community contributors for the future.

For the 2021-22 school year, the campus plans to hold in-person instruction for keiki pre-K through 6th. The hybrid online program is available for students island-wide. For the coming school year, Thompson hopes to increase in-person instruction and tutoring for students in the various communities.
