The Hawai´i Fire Department responded to residential fire in Kohala on the Big Island Sunday, May 16, which destroyed the home of a family of eight.

According to an HFD report, Company 15 received the initial call just after 2:30 pm. Upon arrival, responders found black smoke coming from the rear of a single family residence. The blaze quickly spread to the rest of the home.

The primary structure ultimately collapsed and is considered a total loss of $400,000. The garage also partially collapsed.

The blaze caused a small brush fire in a pasture south of the property, which HFD said it quickly extinguished.

An initial search of the structure was conducted with no occupants located, though subsequent searches resulted in all occupants of the home being found uninjured. The Red Cross responded to provide aid.

HFD remained throughout the evening to douse hotspots, the report continued.
