The Hawai´i Fire Department responded to residential fire in Kohala on the Big Island Sunday, May 16, which destroyed the home of a family of eight.

According to an HFD report, Company 15 received the initial call just after 2:30 pm. Upon arrival, responders found black smoke coming from the rear of a single family residence. The blaze quickly spread to the rest of the home.

The primary structure ultimately collapsed and is considered a total loss of $400,000. The garage also partially collapsed.

The blaze caused a small brush fire in a pasture south of the property, which HFD said it quickly extinguished.
