A brush fire took hold on open grass land approximately 0.5 miles NE of Mahana Bay in the Big Island District of Ka´ū.

HFD units from Pahala, Na’alehu, HOVE, Kea’au, Captain Cook, Central and Waiakea responded to the call in the remote grassland area near Green Sands Beach at around 10 am Monday, May 17. The Hawai´i Fire Department reported that the location of the fire was in a remote area and only accessible by off-road vehicles.

The brush fire spanned approximately five acres with dry and gusty conditions. Larger vehicles with water supply staged on South Point Road. The fire was contained and extinguished using Chopper 1 bucket operations and off-road ground units, HFD reported. Firefighters were assisted by local ranchers with access to the area.
