Coroner’s Inquest Initiated After Death at Kailua Pier

An unnamed man died last week after an incident at the Kailua Pier.

Few details have been made available to date, but the Hawai´i County Police Department on Monday did release a preliminary statement. At approximately 1:16 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2021, Kona Patrol and Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) officers responded to a call at the Pier of a man in need of medical attention.

Hawaiʻi Fire Department personnel also responded, the release said, eventually transporting the male party to the Kona Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The investigation is being classified as a coroner’s inquest. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. Police had released no specific details as to the nature of the death as of Monday, May 3.

The victim’s name has not been released pending positive identification and contact with next of kin.
