A 57-year-old woman suffered minor injuries after a suspected shark attack in Kukio Bay this morning, April 20.

According to the Hawai‘i Fire Department, the woman had been paddling in a six-man canoe and was struck by the reported shark from behind while swimming. The victim was able to get back into the canoe and paddlers took her to shore.

Authorities say the victim suffered a small injury to her leg. The woman was treated on scene and was transported to Queen’s North Hawai‘i Community Hospital in stable condition.

Kukio Bay and Kua Bay will remain closed for the remainder of the day. HFD will conduct an aerial survey Wednesday morning to determine if any closed beaches will be reopened.
