Heavy rains caused flooding, landslides, and loss of property throughout Hawai´i over the previous week. On Sunday, heavy surf added to the problems on the Big Island’s windward coast.

The Hawai´i Police Department reported early Sunday evening that Bayfront Highway in Hilo was closed due to high surf. HPD in a statement estimated the road would re-open sometime Monday morning.

Motorists are asked to use alternate route. Regardless of roads travelled, motorists should proceed with caution, as ponding and flooding was reported on east-side thoroughfares throughout the day Sunday.
