HPD Searching for Man Wanted on Outstanding Warrants

Update: State Sheriffs and Hawai‘i County Police are on the lookout for pre-trial detainee Brian Lee Smith. Smith was supposed to be detained on $1.15 million bail but was erroneously released from Hawai‘i Community Correctional Center on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. He was scheduled to appear in court this afternoon Thursday, July 26, 2018, but didn’t show. A bench warrant was issued for $2 million dollars. The Department of Public Safety is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the erroneous release.

He is awaiting trial on Murder 1 & 2, as well as firearms charges including Ownership or Possession of a Firearm, and Carrying a Firearm in the Commission of a Separate Felony.

Original Post: The Hawaiʻi Island Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating 49-year-old Brian Lee Smith who is wanted on outstanding warrants.

He is described as being 5-feet-7-inches, 130 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.
