U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) released the following statement on President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

“President Trump failed in his duty to support and defend the country today. The American intelligence community has proved without a doubt that Russia meddled in our elections and plans to do so again. And yet President Trump trusted President Putin’s word over the men and women serving our great country. In doing so, he has threatened our democratic institutions while promoting Russian propaganda in front of the world. There is only one question that matters now: when will Congress use its Constitutional authorities to slow or stop this administration from doing any further damage to the United States?”
