For the 9th year in a row, KapohoKine Adventures is hosting “Kama‘aina Weekend” over Memorial Day weekend. While the program was to include free ziplining to the first 100 kama‘aina in line today, KapohoKine Adventures turned no one away and 208 locals enjoyed free ziplining with Zipline Through Paradise – an eight-line course that includes the island’s longest riding tandem line at 2,400 feet.

For those who preferred to keep their feet on the ground, KapohoKine Adventures hosted more than 200 other locals on the grounds of Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo for a day of free family-fun activities including a huge water slide, jump house, and kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding in Hilo Bay. There were also dozens of food trucks and craft and activity booths on site.

“Many local families are unable to afford ziplining even at the steepest discount,” said Tony DeLellis, co-owner of KapohoKine Adventures. “We close our shop every year to say ‘mahalo’ to kamaaina and give them a chance to experience the thrills that visitors enjoy every day. With the added stress caused by the recent eruptions on our community’s financial and personal situations, we felt even more strongly about this year. We hope this small gesture can give at least a temporary reprieve from the stress and hardships our community is facing.”

Kama‘aina Weekend continues tomorrow, May 27, with the first 100 kama’aina in line at the KapohoKine Adventures store at Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo qualifying for free ziplining. Persons as young as 5 years old and 35 lbs can join the fun. Vans begin departures to Zipline Through Paradise at 9 a.m. with the last group returning around 1 p.m. To qualify, proof of Hawai‘i residency and one non-perishable food item per person must be presented at check-in. Food donations will be given to the Food Basket. For more information, call KapohoKine Adventures at (808) 964-1000.
