Flood Advisory Issued for Hawaiʻi County

Update 11:20 p.m.:

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the island of Hawaii in Hawaii County until 2:15 a.m.

At 11:09 p.m., radar indicated heavy showers with a few thunderstorms tracking north over the Big Island. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour in the heavier showers.

Locations in the advisory include the entire island of the Big Island.

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 2:15 a.m. if heavy rain persists.

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

A flash flood watch means conditions may develop that lead to dangerous flash flooding.

Heavy showers are expected to develop this afternoon/evening through tomorrow. Police report all roads are open at this time, but advise that driving conditions deteriorate during heavy downpours.

In addition, the National Weather Service issued a High Wind Watch for Hawaiʻi Island summits today through tomorrow.

A High Wind Watch means regular winds of 35-45 mph with gusts over 70 mph are expected for summit areas 8,000 ft. and above. Motorists in the area are advised to drive with caution.
