Elena M. Barsanti, 50, passed away on July 24, 2017 at her home in Kea‘au.

After college, she moved to San Francisco, where she worked in restaurants and cafes while painting in her spare time. In 2001, Elena moved to the island of Hawai‘i, and it became her home. Together with her partner of 20 years, Angela Racho, they built a house on an empty plot of land outside of Hilo, fulfilling a dream they had shared for many years.
For Elena, making art was essential to life. She was happiest when she was painting or embroidering, making stained glass or, especially, singing. She was known in Hilo for her singing at the weekly farmers’ market, partly to attract customers to the baked goods she was selling, but mostly just for the joy of it.
In addition to her partner, Elena is survived by her brothers, Robert P. Barsanti and Michael J. Barsanti, her sisters-in-law Victoria and Adora Racho, and six nieces and nephews.
Services are being planned for Hawaii and for the east coast. Contributions should be sent to the Barsanti Family Scholarship Fund, c/o The Scholarship Fund of Wakefield, Box 321 Wakefield MA 01880. Arrangements entrusted to Ballard Family Mortuary- Hilo.
