Near Drowning Off Shore of Coconut Island

Moku Ola, Coconut Island, Hilo.

The Hawai‘i County Fire Department responded to a report of an apparent near drowning on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at 3:52 p.m. at an area just off shore Liliu‘okalani Park and Coconut Island.

First responders arrived on scene to find person performing CPR off-shore on rocks. 

The person who alerted authorities stated that he thought the victim was snorkling until realized that the body was just bobbing face down. 

The person said waded out to pull victim on the rocks and started CPR until first responder units arrived.

First responders extracted the patient onto shore and into a medic unit, continuing CPR and then transported the victim to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition.

It is unknown what happened before victim was found floating, face down in the water.
