The Hawai‘i County Fire Department responded to a report of a missing opihi picker who was last seen just north of Kawainui Stream on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at 3:07 p.m.

The area includes a rugged coastline with precipitous cliffs and little to no shoreline access.

It was reported that the opihi picker had disappeared after rappelling down a coastal cliff.

Upon making contact with the reporting party, Chopper 1 fire personnel was directed to the area of his last known point.

The chopper was able to locate the stranded opihi picker. Using a Billy Pugh net, he was safely transported to HFD ground units.

He was assessed and determined to have no injuries.
