The Hawai‘i FIre Department responded to a report of a fire in progress on Royal Poinciana Way in Kailua on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017.

The first unit arrived on the scene at 7:20 p.m. to find a two-bedroom duplex with flames coming out of the front two windows.

Fire personnel were able to keep the fire contained to the kitchen and living room. Heavy smoke damage was found throughout the house. Most contents were destroyed, but there was little damage to the structure of the house.

The fire was extinguished at 9 p.m.

Damage was estimated at $80,000. The saved structure was estimated at $250,000.

Occupants had been evacuated but a cat was later found dead in the back bedroom. The displaced occupants were assisted by the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire was an oil/grease cooking fire in the kitchen.
