Near Drowning Off Honoli‘i Beach Park

Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a kayaker in distress off the shore of Honoli‘i Beach Park on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017.
HFD arrived on scene at 5:10 p.m. and found an off-duty, “seasoned” county lifeguard performing CPR on a man in his 60s.
Per witnesses, the man was slumped over on his kayak prior to being knocked over into the water.
Surfers pulled him to shore.
The kayaker was treated and transported to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition. The exact cause is unknown.

Surf was in the 2- to 4-foot range and Honoli‘i Stream was at a moderate level.
