The Hawai‘i County Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire on Ohai Street in Hilo at 8:01 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a 2,000 square-foot, single-wall home with flames coming out of all visible windows.
The first in units on the scene began a defensive attack by keeping the fire contained to the initial structure.
Upon extinguishment at about 12:30 p.m., a public works excavator was brought in to push over the remaining burned out structure’s skeleton so it would not fall into the neighboring property.
There were no injuries reported during this incident.
The damage was estimated at $250,000.
