HPD Arrests 27 Motorists for DUI Offenses

During the week of Dec. 12 through Dec. 18, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,066 DUI arrests compared with 1,036 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.9%.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,374 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,494 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8%.

So far this year, there have been 26 fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (five of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 31 fatalities, compared with 14 fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 17 fatalities during the same period last year.

This represents an increase of 85.7% for fatal crashes and 82.4% for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
