UPDATE: Sept. 30 9:45 a.m.

Hawai‘i County Civil Defense just released the following information pertaining to yesterday’s Puna Geothermanl steam release.

As of Thursday Sept. 29 at 10:15 p.m., based on all available data from air quality monitoring, there continues to be no threat to the public.

ORIGINAL POST: Sept. 30, 8:22 a.m.

Puna Geothermal reported a release of steam from one of its wells on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 3 p.m.

The situation was contained and secured as of 3:45 p.m.

The Hawai‘i County Fire Department remains on scene and is continuously monitoring the air quality at the site, the perimeter, and the surrounding community.

Based on all available data, there is no threat to the public and no evacuation is necessary.

Civil Defense is monitoring the situation and we will keep the public advised of any changes in the situation.
