HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown

Twenty-three motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between May 2 and May 8. Five of the 23 arrested were involved in traffic crashes, while one was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.

A total of 389 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2016. That number is a 13.7 percent increase from last year’s count of 342 arrests during the same time period.

Broken down by district, seven arrests took place in the South Hilo district. Eight occurred in the Puna district, while six were listed in the Kona district, and two were reported in the South Kohala District.

Major accidents have decreased by 6.3 percent, compared to last year. So far this year, 505 major accidents have taken place. That number compares to 539 during the same time period in 2015.

Nine fatal traffic crashes have occurred on Big Island roadways, one of which resulted in multiple deaths so far in 2016. Those crashes resulted in ten fatalities. Five fatal crashes had also occurred at this point last year, with a total of seven traffic fatalities. The numbers represent an increase of 80 percent in fatal crashes and 42.9 percent for fatalities.
