Scheduled Lane Closures May 9-13

Continuous activity on Umauma Bridge in Hakalau will cause alternating lane closures near mile marker 16 on Highway 19 to remain on a seven-day-a-week, 24-hour schedule as bridge rehabilitation work is underway. Speed on the bridge is reduced to 20 miles per hour.

Alternating single lane closures are also scheduled to take place along Highway 19 between Kulaimano Road and Kauniho Road from Pepeekeo to Hakalau. Work in the area will consist of roadway improvements.

In addition, alternating single lane closures on Saddle Road will occur in both directions between Milepost Markers 8.5 and 11.5, in the vicinity of upper Kaumana, through Friday, May 13 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The closure is for clearing and grubbing of the new Daniel K. Inouye Highway, East Side.

Road work will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. by DPW on the following roadways:

Waikoloa Road will be under alternating lane closures as crews work to construct nine-foot asphalt concrete shoulders on both sides of Waikoloa Road from Highway 190 to Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.

Reconstruction work continues on Komohana Street from Kukuau Street towards Waianuenue Avenue. The project involves the reconstruction of about 4,000 feet of roadway, traffic signal upgrades, pavement striping, and the replacement of utility valves and boxes. A portion of the roadway was previously under a single lane closure, but has since been opened up to narrow two-way traffic.

Ongoing construction work between Lanikaula Street and Kawili Street for the Kapiolani Extension continues. Alternating lane closures will take place about 800 feet towards Kawili Street. Street parking is unavailable in the area and two-way traffic will be reduced to one lane. Work includes the installation of a new concrete curb, drainage improvements, gutter and sidewalks, roadway reconstruction, signing and striping, utility relocation, driveway, and property tie-ins.

Along Mamalahoa Highway, beginning at Farm and Garden Repair and extending past L&L Drive-Inn, a traffic shift to the mauka lane will take place. The shift began on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015 and will last through May. The traffic change is to accommodate the erection of a 475-foot retaining wall along the makai side of Mamalahoa Highway.

Construction activities at the Henry Street and Alahou Street intersection in Kona continues. The contractor’s working hours are from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The project involves trenching work to install underground electrical duct lines, the installation of wireless vehicle detection sensors in the roadway on all four approaches, and other improvements to the intersection in preparation for the upcoming installation of traffic signals.

Roadway improvements along Waianuenue Avenue in Hilo will continue as part of improvement efforts being conducted between Carvalho Park and the makai intersection of Rainbow Drive. Striping work continues on a Monday through Friday schedule from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. A one-way section of Rainbow Drive will be closed permanently to provide safer pedestrian and wheelchair access to cross the bridge.

A right turn lane on Kuauli Road where it intersects the Volcano Highway (makai side) heading towards Kea’au will continue to be worked on through May 10. The work is scheduled between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Alternating lanes will be closed to traffic on Wainaku Street between Hālaulani Place and Pua Lane through May 13. Work will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Additionally, a  temporary one-way traffic pattern will be in effect along a portion of Mohouli Street from through Wednesday, May 25. Traffic will flow only in the makai, or easterly, direction on Mohouli Street between Popolo Street and Kinoole Street between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
