DOE: Parents Urged to Enroll Kindergarteners
Kindergarten enrollment is open.
Students attending kindergarten in the 2016-2017 school year at Hawai’i public schools will begin classes on Aug. 1.
The Hawai’i Department of Education of Friday issued a reminder to parents to plan ahead and enroll students early.
Children who are five years old on or before July 31 can enroll the following school year.
“We encourage our parents to familiarize themselves with kindergarten requirements and to enroll their children early,” said Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi. “Kindergarten is a critical time to give our keiki the solid academic foundation they need for future success.”
In Hawai’i, kindergarten is mandatory.
Parents of children younger than the mandatory kindergarten specifications can send their children to pre-school at a private provider or pre-kindergarten classes, which are available at 19 schools across the state.
