Scheduled Lane Closures April 25-29

Continuous activity on Umauma Bridge in Hakalau will cause alternating lane closures near mile marker 16 on Highway 19 to remain on a seven-day-a-week, 24-hour schedule as bridge rehabilitation work is underway. Speed on the bridge is reduced to 20 miles per hour.

A 24-hour detour on the Kea’au-Pahoa Bypass Road in both directions, between Pahoa Marketplace and Kahakai Boulevard, is scheduled through May for the construction of the Pahoa Roundabout. Temporary traffic signals are installed to direct traffic at the Kahakai Boulevard and Pahoa Village Road intersection. Motorists are advised to drive through the detour with caution.

Alternating single lane closures are also scheduled to take place along Highway 19 between Kulaimano Road and Kauniho Road from Pepeekeo to Hakalau. Work in the area will consist of roadway improvements.

An alternating single lane closure will take place along Highway 19 in both directions between Jardine Road and Old Mamalahoa Highway, in the area of Kaawalii Gulch, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Roadway improvements will be conducted.

In addition, alternating single lane closures will be in place on Highway 19 in both directions between Jardine Road and Puualaea Homestead Road, in the vicinity of Laupahoehoe Gulch, for roadway improvements.

Road work will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. by DPW on the following roadways:

Waikoloa Road will be under alternating lane closures as crews work to construct nine-foot asphalt concrete shoulders on both sides of Waikoloa Road from Highway 190 to Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.

Reconstruction work continues on Komohana Street from Kukuau Street towards Waianuenue Avenue. The project involves the reconstruction of about 4,000 feet of roadway, traffic signal upgrades, pavement striping, and the replacement of utility valves and boxes. A portion of the roadway was previously under a single lane closure, but has since been opened up to narrow two-way traffic.

Ongoing construction work between Lanikaula Street and Kawili Street for the Kapiolani Extension continues. Alternating lane closures will take place about 800 feet towards Kawili Street. Street parking is unavailable in the area and two-way traffic will be reduced to one lane. Work includes the installation of a new concrete curb, drainage improvements, gutter and sidewalks, roadway reconstruction, signing and striping, utility relocation, driveway, and property tie-ins.

Along Mamalahoa Highway, beginning at Farm and Garden Repair and extending past L&L Drive-Inn, a traffic shift to the mauka lane will take place. The shift began on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015 and will last through May. The traffic change is to accommodate the erection of a 475-foot retaining wall along the makai side of Mamalahoa Highway.

Construction activities at the Henry Street and Alahou Street intersection in Kona continues.  The contractor’s working hours are from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The project involves trenching work to install underground electrical duct lines, the installation of wireless vehicle detection sensors in the roadway on all four approaches, and other improvements to the intersection in preparation for the upcoming installation of traffic signals.

Roadway improvements along Waianuenue Avenue in Hilo will continue as part of improvement efforts being conducted between Carvalho Park and the makai intersection of Rainbow Drive. Beginning Monday, April 25, striping work will begin and run on a Monday through Friday schedule from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. A one-way section of Rainbow Drive will be closed permanently to provide safer pedestrian and wheelchair access to cross the bridge.

All lane closures are weather permitting and have the possibility of changing without notice.
