HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown

Twenty-four motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between March 21 and March 27. Nine of the 24 arrested were involved in traffic crashes, while three were under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.

A total of 275 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2016. That number is a 22.2 percent increase from last year’s count of 225 arrests during the same time period.

Broken down by district, seven arrests took place in the South Hilo district. Four occurred in the Puna district, while 11 were listed in the Kona district and two were reported in the South Kohala District.

Major accidents have decreased by 5.4 percent, compared to last year. So far this year, 334 major accidents have taken place. That number compares to 353 during the same time period in 2015.

Four fatal traffic crashes have occurred on Big Island roadways, one of which resulted in multiple deaths. Those crashes resulted in five fatalities. Three fatal crashes had also occurred at this point last year, with a total of five traffic fatalities. The numbers represent an increase of 33.3 percent in fatalities.

HPD will continue to patrol the island and maintain roadblocks.
