Salim Gloyd made a big impact on the University of Hawai’i at Hilo and the PacWest Conference in his short time on the Big Island.

Appearing in only 17 games, Gloyd finished the season as the PacWest’s leading scorer, dropping at least 30 points in three games this season, earning him the conference’s Newcomer of the Year award.

Gloyd, a senior transfer from the University of Indianapolis, missed UH-Hilo’s games in November and December because of eligibility concerns. He wasted very little time making his impact on the court, however, scoring in double-digits in his first six games to help pull the team out of an 0-9 start. He would end up scoring at least 20 points in 13 games this year.

For the year, Gloyd finished fifth in the conference in rebounds (8.6) and eighth in field goal percentage (.527).

Michael Smith of California Baptist was named the conference’s Player of the Year, Mark Ogden Jr. of Dixie State was given the Defender of the Year award, and Point Loma Nazarene’s Josh Rodriguez earned the Freshman of the Year honor.
