Victoria Garcia isn’t wasting any time making an impact on the University of Hawai’i at Hilo women’s softball team.

Garcia, a junior transfer from El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., hit .615 last week with four runs batted in to earn the PacWest Conference’s Newcomer of the Week award in softball.

UH-Hilo swept BYU-Hawai’i in the four games played last week, anchored at the plate by Garcia, who hit 8-for-13 with three doubles and six runs scored. She batted 3-for-4 with a stolen base in the back end of a doubleheader on Friday, then came back the next day and hit 3-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, and three runs scored. She capped the series by hitting 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

For the season, Garcia leads her team with a .429 batting average, two home runs, and 18 walks. She has also walked 11 times, the most on the squad. Among the best in the PacWest, Garcia ranks second with 24 hits, 18 RBI, and 18 runs scored.

Concordia outfielder Ryann Ferguson was named Player of the Week, while Concordia’ Kayla Hatch, who pitches for Cal Baptist, was named this week’s PacWest Pitcher of the Week.

This week’s PacWest Softball Awards recognize games played between Feb. 15-21.
