Kona Fuel Prices Stable, Hilo Sees Slight Fluctuations

PIXABAY FuelHilo fuel price averages saw a very slight increase this week as Kona fuel averages continue to cling to their solid averages over the past month.

Using numbers from AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report, along with Gas Buddy Data, Big Island Now continues to track fuel prices on the Big Island.

On Monday, regular fuel in Hilo sat at its same average as last week, which was $2.54. Mid-grade fuel jumped up in average by two cents to $2.66, compared to last Monday’s average of $2.63. Premium fuel also saw an increase from $2.76 to $2.78.

One month ago, regular fuel in Hilo was three cents less than its current average. Mid-grade fuel was one cent less, while premium fuel was the same as its current average.

Average fuel prices compared to the same week in February 2015 remain lower in average across the board. At this point last year, regular fuel in Hilo cost $0.39 more at an average of $2.95. Mid-grade fuel cost an average of $0.40 more at $3.06. Premium gas cost $0.37 more on average last year at $3.15.

Another steady week of fuel price averages took place in Kona. Big Island Now’s calculation of Gas Buddy data from Kailua-Kona shows that regular fuel has held onto its average over the six weeks of $2.79. Mid-grade fuel again saw no movement, hanging on to an average of $2.89, as did premium fuel at an average of $2.98 on Monday.

In Honolulu, the average price of regular fuel was 14 cents lower than in Hilo, the same difference seen last week. Fuel averages were $0.42 lower in Honolulu than in Kona. Honolulu fuel purchasers were paying an average of $2.37, a drop of four cents in the past week and a total drop of eight cents in the past two weeks.

Diesel fuel in Hilo is averaging $4.03, one cent higher than last week’s average. Honolulu diesel buyers were paying an average of $4.09, a one-cent decrease.

The national average for regular fuel on Monday was $1.71, a slight increase of two cents over the past week. In addition, the national average is $0.83 cents less than Hilo’s average this week and $1.08 less than Kailua-Kona’s average prices.

Club member-only prices, such as Costco and HFN, are excluded from this analysis and its averages.
