‘Suspicious Device’ Evacuates Ka’u Learning Academy

badge 123A nine-year-old was arrested Wednesday after reportedly being found with a suspicious device resembling a “pipe bomb” in his backpack at Ka’u Learning Academy.

The Hawai’i Police Department is investigating the incident after receiving the 10:15 a.m. call reporting that school officials had located a suspicious device in the boys backpack.

HPD arrested the boy on suspicion of possessing an explosive device. He was released to a family member as the investigation continues.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Army’s Explosive Ordinance Detail on Oahu, the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as the Hawai’i County Fire Department were all notified of the incident.

Police say the school was evacuated for the rest of the day.
