Yes, a comfortable bed can help you get a good night’s sleep; we know this. But it can also be essential for kids’ spinal development as they grow. That’s according to Elana Stone, vice-president of marketing and spokeswoman for BedMart.

“A mattress is really critical to helping you live an active, healthy lifestyle,” explained Stone, adding that we spend one-third of our lives in bed. “To have the proper support—the proper spinal alignment—these are all things you should take into consideration when purchasing a mattress, so that you can live the best life during the day.”

Stone knows beds. Her family has been in the mattress industry for more than 70 years. In 1992, her dad, Steven Stone, started the first BedMart in Portland, Oregon. Today, there are 30 BedMart stores throughout Oregon, Washington, and now, Hawaiʻi.

“In order to hang out with my dad, I’d hang out in mattress warehouses, climb the racks and sweep the warehouse floor,” she remembered with a smile. “So now, after going to school and working in a couple marketing agencies, I was able to come back to the family business and have a more professional position in the company than ‘mattress climber.’ It’s been a lot of fun; I work with my family, we work with our friends, we are all a big ʻohana.”

Many local ʻohana got the gift of a quality mattress in Kona, when BedMart teamed up with Tempur-Pedic and Aloha Marine Lines to support the Neighborhood
Place of Kona, Hope Diamond Ministries and Family Programs Hawaiʻi.

BedMart donated more than 50 Tempur-Pedic mattresses to families during the community event in December at its Kailua-Kona store, which opened in May. There was a similar donation event on Maui to celebrate the March opening of BedMart’s first store in the state.

With the new year comes Hawaiʻi’s third BedMart, slated to open in Hilo in January. Hilo families in need can look forward to mattress donations as well.

“The BedMart family is excited to be a part of the community,” said Stone. “As a family-owned company, our top priority is helping other families to have a safe and comfortable place to sleep. We commit to this belief every time we open a new store.”
