‘Mechanical Issue’ Diverts Kona-Bound Plane

United Airlines Flight 1721, en route from San Francisco to the Big Island, was turned around after experiencing “a mechanical issue.”

The flight took off from San Francisco International Airport at 8:59 a.m., according to FlightAware.

A United Airlines representative tells Big Island Now that the Boeing 757 aircraft was headed to the Kona International Airport from SFO.

The spokesperson also said the flight, which was carrying 206 passengers and seven crew members, was returned to San Francisco as a precaution.
