HPD Investigates Possible Drowning at Hapuna

The Hawai’i Police Department is investigating a possible drowning incident at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area on Thursday.
South Kohala officers responded to a 2:53 p.m. call of a possible drowning. Upon arrival, they found an 80-year-old man, who was taken to shore after calling for help about 20 yards out in the water.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was attempted, and the man was taken to North Hawai’i Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:03 p.m. that day.
The victim was identified as Glen Giles of Las Vegas, Nev.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of Giles’ death. The case is being classified as a coroner’s inquest.
