Waikoloa Swimmer’s Death Caused by Medical Condition

A man was pulled to shore after being found off the waters of Anaeho’omalu Bay in Waikoloa Sunday died from a medical condition while swimming, according to the Hawai’i Police Department.

HPD has identified the man as 49-year-old Jurgen Essig of Kirchheim unter Teck, Germany.

Just before 1 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to the Waikoloa area after receiving a call reporting that a concerned citizen had pulled an unknown man to shore and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation with another bystander.

Hawai’i County Fire Department personnel were also on scene and were unable to revive Essig.
