Kamuela Man Dies in Vehicle Accident
A two-vehicle collision Saturday evening has led to the death of a 20-year-old passenger.
The Hawai’i Police Department reports that officers responded to a 7:43 p.m. call of an incident one-mile south of the three-mile marker on Highway 190.
According to authorities, a 1999 green Volkswagen Jetta was traveling north on Highway 190 when the vehicle lost control as a result of wet roadway conditions. The vehicle had reportedly been in an area where the road curves.
The Jetta veered into the oncoming southbound lane of travel and hit the side of a gold 2014 Dodge Caravan, driven by a 55-year-old Waikoloa woman.
Everyone involved in the crash was taken to North Hawai’i Community Hospital for treatment.
The 20-year-old Kamuela man who died was officially pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m. He has been identified as Jourdan Evangelista.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine Evangelista’s exact cause of death.
The Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a negligent homicide investigation.
