The postponed football game between Hilo and Konawaena has been moved to Monday, as announced by the Big Island Interscholastic Federation on Saturday afternoon.

Kickoff for the Labor Day football tilt is at approximately 4:30 p.m. following the junior varsity game, which starts at 2 p.m.

Initially scheduled for Friday, the game was postponed because of bad weather and unplayable field conditions. Thunder and lightning had been reported near the school before 2 p.m., and standing water was visible on the field at least an hour before kickoff of the junior varsity game was scheduled.

According to BIIF Executive Secretary Lyle Crozier, the initial plan was to wait until Tuesday’s meeting of the league’s athletic directors to come up with a solution. Both schools’ ADs, Bill Trumbo of Konawaena and Kurt Kawachi of Hilo, remained in contact with Crozier and came up with the quick solution.

Crozier also told Big Island Now that it was important to keep the week before the state tournament open in case of another storm and the possibility of more postponements, similar to last year. The BIIF has no bye weeks during the season.

The open dates before the state tournament are Oct. 30 and Oct. 31.

To accommodate the move, several of next week’s football games have been shifted around. Hilo was supposed to visit Kamehameha-Hawai’i on Thursday night. That game has now been moved to Saturday afternoon. The junior varsity game will kickoff at 3 p.m., with the varsity contest to start at approximately 5:30 p.m. from Pai’ea Stadium.

Also on the move is the 8-man football game between Ka’u and Pahoa. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the game has now been moved to Thursday and will be played at Kea’au High School’s football field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The schedule for Friday, Sept. 11 remains unchanged. Hawai’i Preparatory Academy will visit Kealakehe and Waiakea will travel to Honoka’a.
