Stormy weather created unplayable conditions at Konawaena High School’s Julian R. Yates Field, forcing the school to postpone Friday night’s game against Hilo.

Thunder and lightning was reported near school grounds at approximately 2 p.m. Friday and heavy rain continued for several hours afterward. Just after 4 p.m., the league announced the cancellation of the game.

No make-up date has been announced for the game. There are no bye weeks in the schedule until the week after the league championship games. The league left Oct. 30 and Oct. 31 open as a free week before the state tournament.

Also Friday, the BIIF announced that Saturday’s 8-man football game between Kohala and Pahoa had been postponed. BIIF Executive Secretary Lyle Crozier told Big Island Now that Kohala reported a rash of sick players who had contracted influenza, and the school did not want to spread the flu to anyone else.

Crozier said that the game will likely be rescheduled if it has a bearing in the standings. There are no similar bye weeks in the schedule.
