Hilo High School’s junior varsity squad won’t get an opportunity to take the field Friday night before the varsity team faces Kamehameha-Kapalama.

Hilo’s JV was scheduled to play an 8-man football game against Ka’u High School at 5 p.m. at Wong Stadium, prior to the big varsity tilt. On Monday, however, Ka’u athletic director Kalei Namohala announced that the Trojans would not be able to play the game, saying that there were not enough eligible players who completed three days of conditioning and ten days in pads to compete in the game.

Kurt Kawachi, Hilo athletic director, said after Kau’s announcement that his school was looking for a junior varsity replacement to keep a game on the schedule. His search was unsuccessful, however, and on Wednesday, Kawachi announced that Friday would be a varsity-only night.

Kickoff for the contest between Kamehameha-Kapalama and Hilo is at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio stations AM 850 in Hilo and AM 790 in Kona. It will also be simulcast on KBIG FM, which is heard at 97.9 FM in Hilo and 106.1 FM in Kona, as part of the stations’ “Big Friday Night BIIF Football” broadcast series.
