Over 200 junior lifeguards competed in the State of Hawai’i Junior Lifeguard Championships on Aug. 1 at Hapuna Beach.

Teams were separated by county and participated in five different events: a 1,000-meter beach run, 200-meter swim, five-person paddle board relay, beach flag race, and the Iron Guard, which consists of a 500-meter beach run, 200-meter paddle board, and a 200-meter swim.

Kauai took first place in the competition, scoring 712 points, followed by Oahu with 636 points. Home beach advantage didn’t factor in for the Hawai’i County team, which finished in third place with 543 points. Maui rounded out the standings with 357 points.
