Man Dies in Early Morning Traffic Crash

A 52-year-old Kona man died in a two-vehicle collision that occurred in Kona early Monday morning.

The accident occurred east of the intersection of Kaiminani Drive and Laui Street.

Hawai’i Police Department officials has identified the victim as Robert N. Weinstock.

Officers responded to a 12:41 a.m. call reporting that a 2007 Ford pickup truck traveling west on Kaiminani Drive before the Laui Street intersection crossed the centerline and crashed head-on into a 2003 Nissian sports-utility vehicle.

Weindstock was driving the Nissian sport-utility vehicle.

Both drivers were taken to Kona Community Hospital, where Weinstock was pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m.

The driver of the Ford pickup has been identified as 26-year-old Justin Rohan of Kona.

Rohan was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. He was released pending further investigation as he was being treated for his injuries at Kona Community Hospital.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death and a negligent homicide investigation was initiated by the Traffic Enforcement Unit.
