UPDATE: Man Shoots Woman and Officer, Barricades Himself

The Hawai’i Police Department has identified the 37-year-old man involved in the domestic incident that left both a woman and an officer with gunshot wounds as Macdon D. Thromman of Kapa’au.

The man who barricaded himself in a Halaula home is in police custody. He was arrested just before 4:30 p.m.

No additional injuries have occurred and the Hawai’i Police Department is in the process of reopening the Akoni Pule Highway.

A man who shot at both a woman and a Hawai’i Police Department officer has barricaded himself in a home on the 53-4200 block of Akoni Pule Highway in Halaula.

According to authorities, the barricade extends from an incident that began Monday night just before 8 p.m.

Officers responded to a domestic disturbance complaint after neighbors reported loud yelling and screaming coming from the home. When officers approached the residence, several people were observed running from the house and a gunshot was fired at the officers.

One officer was struck on his right forearm by a bullet.

Following the shooting, a woman who was in the house approached the officers, saying she was shot in her outer thigh by her boyfriend.

The injured woman and officer were taken to North Hawai’i Community Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries.

HPD says the suspect, a 37-year-old man, barricaded himself in the house, and as of 8:12 a.m., remains in the home. Police say he is believed to be the only occupant in the home.

Currently on the scene is HPD’s Special Response Team. Residents in the nearby area have been evacuated and Akoni Pule Highway has been closed near the 25 mile marker since just after 4 a.m.

The officer injured in the incident is a 43-year-old, 14-year veteran with HPD. Officials say he is in stable condition. The 32-year-old woman is also listed in stable condition.

Area II Criminal Investigations Division detectives are investigating the incident.
