The Pahoa Senior Center is one week away from reopening, according to the Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreations, who will reinstate services at the location beginning June 29.

Among the services returning include the Hawai’i County Nutrition Program, Elderly Recreation Services, Coordinated Services for the Elderly, and the Pahoa Senior Club.

Closure to the facility in September 2014 followed the increased threat of the advancing June 27 lava flow that perched itself above the town of Pahoa. Operations at the facility were relocated so that it could be used as an emergency fire station that would service the community in lower Puna.
