The body of an unknown person was located about 80-100 feet south of Kekuanaoa Street and about a half-mile east of the intersection of Kekuanaoa Street and Kanoelehua Avenue on Monday morning, according to the Hawai’i Police Department.

At around 8:37 a.m., South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of a body off of the road leading to the Hilo airport.

Police say the body was found in a makeshift shelter in an overgrown area. The body was in an advanced stage of decomposition.

On Tuesday, an autopsy will be conducted to determine the sex and cause of death. Police say both fingerprints and dental records may be used to identify the body.
