The Palace Theater and the University of Hawai’i at Hilo Women’s Studies program are co-sponsoring a “Women in Jazz, Yesterday and Today” event on Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m.

Three components will make up the evening event, held at the Palace Theater. “Lady Be Good: Instrumental Women in Jazz,” a documentary about the challenges and joys experienced by women playing in jazz bands between the 1920’s and 1970’s, will begin the evening. Following the film screening, the documentary’s filmmaker, Kay D. Ray, will lead a discussion about the film and the women featured in it. The evening will end with dancing in the lobby with music featured by the all-star and all-female jazz band, Minx.

Tickets for the event costs $7 for students with an updated UH-Hilo ID card, $9 for senior citizens, and $12 for general admission.

Those interested in attending the event may purchase tickets at the Palace Theater box office between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays or by calling the box office at 934-7010 and paying by credit card.
