The Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Monday that the new nighttime open-swim sessions held at the Pahoa Community Aquatic Center will be temporarily suspended starting Tuesday while upgrades are conducted.

Officials say that lighting, as well as other safety enhancements, need to be completed prior to the pilot program continuing.

Earlier this month, P&R personnel made the decision to extend operating hours in response to swimmers’ requests. The extended hours were until 8 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.

Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 27, normal operating hours of 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on weekends will resume.
