UHH’s Johnson Receives Second PWC Weekly Award

For the second time in three weeks, University of Hawai’i at Hilo forward Tre Johnson was named PacWest Conference Player of the Week in men’s basketball.

This time, however, he’s sharing the award for games played between Dec. 15-21. Azusa Pacific’s Troy Leaf, the top scorer in the conference, shares the award with Johnson.

UH-Hilo played in one game during the week, an 82-79 upset over then-15th ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai’i at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. His tip-in basket with just over a second remaining in regulation, plus a free throw to complete a three-point play, was the difference in Saturday’s victory.

Johnson, a junior from Reno, Nev., scored a career-high 28 points in the game, shooting 9-for-13 from the floor and 10-for-14 from the charity stripe.

He currently ranks third in the PacWest with 21 points per game, second in field goal percentage at 59.3 percent, and ninth in rebounds. grabbing 6.8 boards per outing.

Johnson and the Vulcans will return to the court on Jan. 3 against Dixie State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium, following the women’s game at 5 p.m.
