A 33-year-old woman has been released from police custody as the investigation into an incident involving a stolen pickup truck and a gunshot fired by a police officer continues.

Ashley Brooks De Morales was arrested at her home Wednesday on suspicion of two counts of attempted first-degree murder, second degree theft, and contempt of court. The Mountain View woman was released from custody at 11 a.m. Friday.

On Dec. 16, Puna patrol officers were en route to a separate incident on Highway 11 near Kulani Road when they attempted to stop a vehicle stolen from Prince Kuhio Plaza. The vehicle turned toward the officers and began to speed toward them in a threatening manner.

One of the unidentified officers fired a shot toward the vehicle, which sped away toward Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.

An investigation continues into the theft of the truck, a 1989 black Nissan hard body single-cab pickup. The license plate number is ZBC-027. The series of events leading to Tuesday’s run-in with officers also remain under investigation.

Anyone with information should contact Detective Grant Todd at 961-2385 or [email protected].
