HPD Weekly DUI Statistics and District Breakdown

Thirty-one arrests were made last week for driving under the influence, according to the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistics.

Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were under the age of 21.

A total of 975 DUI arrests have been made so far this year, in comparison to last year’s 1,093 at this time, a decrease of 10.8 percent.

Accompanying this week’s statistics is a current breakdown of arrests by district. Kona leads with 352 arrests so far this year and South Hilo follows with 317.

Major accidents on Big Island roadways have increased by 14.8 percent last year. So far this year, there have been 1,314 major accidents, compared to last year’s 1,145.

There has been a decrease of 52.2 percent in the number of traffic fatalities that have occurred. Eleven traffic fatalities have happened so far this year, compared to 23 during the same period last year.

Six of the fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both.

HPD will continue patrols and roadblocks island wide.
