Fall From a Flatbed Truck Kills Waikoloa Man

According to a Hawai’i Police Department release Tuesday, a 36-year-old Waikoloa man has died from injuries he sustained when he fell from a moving vehicle on Oct.10 in Waimea.

The victim has been identified as Leo Koichy.

HPD responded at 8:43 a.m. on Oct. 10 to Lalamilo Farm Road in Waimea. Police determined that Koichy had been riding in the back of a flatbed truck that was heading to another farm lot when he fell off the truck and hit his head on the road.

Koichy was unresponsive and taken to North Hawai’i Community Hospital.

Later, he was transferred to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he was pronounced dead at 5:56 p.m. on Oct 23.

Initially, police investigated the case as a negligent injury, but have since reclassified it as negligent homicide.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
